To guarantee the high quality standards in the automotive industry, the engineers at the BMW automotive group now use several fully automated bin picking cells for series production of passenger cars at the state-of-the-art plant in Leipzig. Equipped with 3D sensors from the ShapeDrive series, they guarantee precise picking of chaotically arranged metal parts for car body production.

Stripe patterns are first projected onto the objects via structured light, which are recorded by the integrated camera with micrometer accuracy. The resulting data set, also known as the point cloud, is sent to the analysis module in real-time via an interface. There, a virtual 3D model of the box content is created, which is used to derive exact coordinates for the picking process. Find out how the overall system, consisting of robots, 3D cameras, software and control, works in detail in our application film. Watch it now!
